ATHOLVILLE (GNB) – The ski hill at Sugarloaf Provincial Park is open for the holiday season.

“We are inviting New Brunswickers and visitors to discover or rediscover the many outdoor winter activities available at Sugarloaf Provincial Park over the holidays,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Bill Fraser. “The provincial parks provide an opportunity to get some exercise and spend quality time with friends and family in a fun, healthy environment.”

Traditionally the ski hill opens in mid-December and closes in March. There was enough snow for the ski hill to open Dec.17. Conditions permitting, it will remain open every day throughout the holidays except Dec. 25.

During the winter, Sugarloaf Provincial Park boasts 12 alpine ski trails, a terrain park with half-pipe, a sliding hill, ice-skating and trails for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. In addition, there are about 68 caches for those who enjoy the increasingly-popular activity, geocaching. The main lodge and restaurant are available to host gatherings like Christmas parties, weddings and meetings.

The facility, which is open year-round with activities during all seasons, employs up to 61 full-time and part-time employees, depending upon the time of the year.

“Sugarloaf is an important economic driver in the region, especially during the winter season,” said Fraser. “It is a valuable resource that helps create jobs and provides the perfect backdrop to help families connect with each other and with nature.”
