RED DEER, Alta. (GNB) – The Canada Winter Games are now officially over and Team New Brunswick won a total of nine medals during the two weeks of competitions that took place in Red Deer, Alta.

Triple medalist para-nordic skier Céline Kavanaugh and her guide Charlotte Toner led Team New Brunswick into Red Deer’s Centrium, the site of Saturday’s closing ceremony. Kavanaugh won two silver medals and a bronze medal in para-nordic cross-country skiing events.

Chef de mission Nicole Smith was pleased with the performance of the athletes during the games.

“Members of Team New Brunswick are leaving Red Deer knowing they gave their best and will have positive memories of their experience,” said Smith. “I am very proud of our athletes’ performances and they made our province proud.”

Team New Brunswick won a total of nine medals: one gold (Isaiah Haya, boxing), three silver (Céline Kavanaugh and guide Charlotte Toner, two, para-nordic cross-country skiing; and Cameron MacMaster, artistic gymnastics) and five bronze (Céline Kavanaugh, para-nordic cross-country skiing; Anthony Cormier Losier, Colton Gough, Tyler MaGee and Conor Murray, 3,000-metre men’s short-track speedskating relay; Mahée Savoie, judo; Keeley Hussey, judo; and Molly Kane, Special Olympics level III figure skating).

On Saturday, the women’s curling team of Rachel Brewer, Erica Cluff, Ashley Cormier and Deanna MacDonald lost in an extra end to Nova Scotia in the bronze medal match.

In the men’s ski cross event, Samuel Alexandre Bossé finished sixth followed by teammates Remi Levesque (13th), Liam Martin (33rd), Owen McLean (33rd), Jonathan Magee (33rd), Malcolm Dunphy (49th) and Dominik Aucoin (49th).

Chloe Laplante, who was the top New Brunswicker in the women’s ski cross, finished 26th. Laplante was followed by teammates Jolaine Bosse (33rd), Elizabeth McLean (33rd), Laine Sutherland (33rd), Gabrielle Bosshard (33rd) and Kamille Aucoin (33rd).

Team New Brunswick placed 15th in the mixed cross-country 4x5-km race, which took place in the afternoon.

Team New Brunswick was represented by 200 athletes, 65 coaches, managers and technical staff and 20 mission team members and competed in alpine skiing, para alpine skiing, artistic gymnastics, artistic swimming, archery, badminton, biathlon, boxing, cross-country skiing, para-nordic skiing, curling, figure skating, hockey, judo, ringette, speedskating, squash, trampoline and wheelchair basketball.

The games alternate every two years between summer and winter games and are one of the largest multi-sport events held in the country, featuring 19 sports, more than 150 events and up to 3,600 athletes, coaches and managers.

The next winter games will be held on Prince Edward Island in 2023.
