WINNIPEG (GNB) – Team New Brunswick claimed two more medals Saturday at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg.
Swimmer Brooklyn Douthwright and the women’s volleyball team won bronze medals, bringing Team New Brunswick’s total to 24: four gold, nine silver and 11 bronze medals.
Douthwright placed third in the 5,000-metre open swim at the Pan Am Pool to claim the bronze medal. The open swim was relocated to the pool as E. coli levels at Birds Hill Provincial Park slightly exceeded the acceptable levels for recreational swimming standards. Saturday’s medal-winning performance was Douthwright’s fourth medal of the games.
The women’s volleyball team defeated Ontario in a hard fought battle 3-2 to claim the day’s second bronze medal. The team’s medal performance is volleyball’s highest-ever placing at the Canada Summer Games. The men’s volleyball squad finished in seventh place Saturday after beating Nova Scotia 3-1.
The women’s softball team lost 7-3 to host Manitoba to finish ninth in the standings.
The women’s road cycling team completed the criterium event with Danielle Dumouchel 20th, Sarah Gilbert 21st , Amanda Lee 25th and Laura Clarke 26th. The men's competition ended with Alex Cormier 28th, Paul Tremblay 30th, Chandler Scott 31st and Aiden Schenkels 35th.
