WINNIPEG (GNB) – Team New Brunswick started the second week of competition at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg today with strong performances on the courts, field and in the water.

Team New Brunswick’s Cam Crowell, Daniel Gallagher and Ryan Small, opened the -canoe kayak event. Crowell placed second in the men’s K-1 500-metre consolation final while Gallagher and Small finished third in the K-2 1,000-metre consolation final. The kayakers return to the Red River Tuesday for more competition in the men’s and women’s K-1 1,000-metre and K-4 1,000-metre events.

Team New Brunswick returned to competition today with eight medals. The three gold, two silver and three bronze medals were won during the first week of competition in track and field.

Three new provincial records were established at the Pam Am pool. Fredericton’s Jacob Gallant set a new record in the men’s 800-metre freestyle and both the women’s and men’s 4x200-metre freestyle relay squads set new records. Para swimmers Gabrielle Corasaniti and Jesse Canney finished fourth in their respective events.

The women’s volleyball team won their first match of the games, defeating Quebec 3-1. Later in the evening, Ontario defeated New Brunswick 3-0. The men’s team lost its opening match to Ontario 3-0. Both volleyball teams return the court Tuesday.

In tennis, Team New Brunswick beat Newfoundland and Labrador 5-1 in team play at the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club. The victory allowed the tennis team to advance to quarter-final matches against Alberta this evening. Alberta defeated New Brunswick 6-0.

The women’s softball squad opened its round-robin schedule with a 10-0 victory over Newfoundland and Labrador. The team lost 9-0 to Ontario this evening and will face off against Nova Scotia and British Columbia Tuesday.

Competition begins Tuesday for cycling, golf and men’s soccer with wrestling starting Wednesday.
