WINNIPEG (GNB) – Team New Brunswick won three more medals today at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg.

Para-athlete Veronica Coombes, of Shediac Cape, won a pair of gold medals in the women’s 400-metre and 1,500-metre races tonight at the University of Manitoba Stadium. Jacob LeBlanc, of Moncton, won bronze in the men’s 1,500-metre race.

“My main goal was to try to get a medal and get the best times I could and I accomplished that,” said Coombes, after her second race today.

Today’s three-medal performance in track and field lifts Team New Brunswick’s medal count to six: two gold, one silver and three bronze. On Tuesday, Laura Dickinson, of Miramichi, won silver in the 3000-metre steeplechase while Liam Turgeon, of Tide Head, claimed bronze in the shot put and Christel Robichaud, of Moncton, won bronze in the female para discus.

“It was a weaker start but I got back up to the top and I was able to get a bronze medal,” said LeBlanc.

Dickinson, Robichaud, Coombes and LeBlanc return to the track Friday, the last day of competition for week one Canada Games athletes.

Rowing and sailing return to their respective waters Friday. The rowing team will hit Rabbit Lake in the double scull male and female consolation finals while the female fours of Caroline Grant, Julie Hill, Stephanie Peglar and Kendra Schmidt are in the final. The sailing team hits Lake Winnipeg for the final day of competition out of the Gimli Yacht Club.

The triathlon team finishes with the mixed team relay out of Bird Provinical Park. The team relays were held today and both the men and women finished 10th in their respective events.

Competition wrapped today for several disciplines. The men’s basketball team lost 85-67 to Saskatchewan for an eighth-place finish. The women’s squad defeated Saskatchewan 67-57 to claim fifth spot. Men’s beach volleyball finished in eighth spot following a loss to Quebec.

The men’s softball team completed the Canada Games with a seventh place finish. The team defeated host Manitoba 13-6 in the morning, but lost 8-3 to Prince Edward Island.

The baseball team beat Newfoundland-Labrador 7-6 in extra innings to finish ninth overall.

Men’s mountain biking competitions finished with the sprints. Rémi Levesque and Anthony Arseneau placed third and fourth respectively in the second heat, while Craig Marshall placed third in the fifth heat.
