WINNIPEG (GNB) – New Brunswick athletes will take centre stage Saturday as competitions begin at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg.

Basketball will be the first sport to see action when New Brunswick’s women face Team Prince Edward Island and the men tipoff against Team Alberta in the morning.

The men’s softball will play twice, facing Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec respectively. The women’s soccer team will close off the day’s competition with an evening match against Team Nova Scotia.

Athletics, beach volleyball, mountain biking, rowing, sailing and triathlon teams will train Saturday before starting their respective competitions Sunday. Rowing will start their competitions on Sunday at the Kenora Rowing Club in Ontario, which is the rowing venue.

This evening, Laura Dickinson, of Miramichi, led Team New Brunswick into the opening ceremony at the Bell MTS Place. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau officially declared the games open during the ceremony.
