SHERBROOKE, Que. (GNB) – Team NB returns home with 16 medals, five gold, five silver and six bronze, from the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que.

“Team NB can be proud of its performance at the 2013 Canada Summer Games,” said Stephane Hachey, New Brunswick’s chef-de-mission. "Our athletes were up to the challenge and responded with 16 medals matching our second-best showing.”

The rowing team earned a pair of medals on Saturday, the last day of competition with Taylor Perry (Fredericton) and Jack Summerhayes (Quispamsis) rowing their way to a silver medal in the men’s double sculls. The duo joined their crewmates Nick Votour (Saint John), Jack Smith (Rothesay), Cole Northrup (Rothesay), Andrew McGillicuddy (McAdam), Joe Chamberlain (Fredericton) and Andrew Johnston (Moncton) to claim bronze in the men’s eight finals at Lac Magog. Perry earned a gold medal in the men’s single scull final Friday.

The men’s four composed of Joe Chamberlain (Fredericton), Andrew McGillicuddy (McAdam), Alex Robichaud (Fredericton) and Jack Smith (Rothesay) finished fifth. Cathleen Trafton (Saint John) and Kendra Sankey (Rothesay), the women’s lightweight double sculls, finished fourth. The women’s double sculls duo of Maura Boyle (Rothesay) and Shelby Hughes (Saint John) won the consolation final Saturday, finishing seventh overall.

Several sports wrapped up their respective competitions Saturday at the Canada Games. The women’s basketball defeated Quebec 48-32 to finish seventh in the standings. The men’s soccer finished eighth overall following a 3-1 loss to Nova Scotia. Triathlon’s mixed relay team composed of Reid Burrows (Grand Bay-Westfield), Carol-Ann MacDonald (Irishtown) Marie-Christine Noël (Lamèque) and Paul Tremblay (Saint John) finished seventh in the event.

The road cycling team completed its competition in the criterium event. Natalie Cormier (Memramcook) and Julia Cormier (Hanwell) finished 18th and 24th respectively in the women’s event. The men’s team saw Julien Roussel (Dieppe) place 6th with Neil Symington (Sussex) and Stuart Wight (Riverview) finishing 24th and 25th, respectively.

Both the men’s golf team of Patrick Livingston (Fredericton), Travis Soucoup (Sussex), Sam Young (Rothesay) and women’s team of Krysta Schaus (Fredericton) Molly MacDermaid (Bathurst) and Claire Konning (Indian Mountain), each finished sixth in their respective category.

Following Saturday’s day of competition, double medal winner Genevieve Lalonde, of Moncton, served as Team NB’s flag bearer at the closing ceremonies.

“Being named Team NB’s flag bearer is pretty exciting,” Lalonde, who won gold by setting a new provincial, national and Canada Games record in the 2.000-metre steeplechase, and a bronze in the 1,500-metres on the track.

“This past week has been awesome, and I could not have done it without the support of my parents, teammates, friends and province,” she said.
