SHERBROOKE, Que. (GNB) – Team NB started the second week of competition at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que., with fine performances on the track and on the road.

Mitch Quigg of Saint John enters the second and final day of the decathlon Tuesday, sitting in second spot after a great performance Monday on the track at the Stade – Université de Sherbrooke.

Alexander Williston of Bay-du-Vin blazed down the track in the 100 metres in 10.96 seconds to qualify for Thursday’s A Final.

“It has been a very successful day on the track,” said Team NB track and field coach Jennifer Butler. “Many athletes got PBs (personal bests), and some set themselves up for medal positions. We could not have asked for anymore from our athletes.”

Para athletes Christel Robicahud of Moncton finished 4th, and  Kellianne Richardson of Fredericton placed 5th in the shot put. The men’s 4 x 100-metre relay broke a provincial record Monday evening with a time of 42.63 seconds to qualify for Thursday’s A Final.

Stuart Wight of Riverview placed fourth in the individual time trial road cycling race in nearby Sainte-Catherine-de-Hatley, Que. Wight cycled the 20.4-kilometre course in 25 minutes, 30 seconds, just 25 seconds shy of a bronze medal. Teammates Marc Evers of Dieppe placed 21st, while Devin Doiron of Rogersville, Julien Roussel of Dieppe and Neil Symington of Sussex placed 28th, 34th and 37th, respectively, In the women’s 15.6-kilometre race, Natalie Cormier of Memramcook placed 13th, and Julia Cormier of Hanwell came 30th.

The men's and women’s triathlon teams make their debut Tuesday in the individual events at Lac Memphrémagog in nearby Magog, Que. Both the men’s and women’s beach volleyball squads return to the court today, playing against Newfoundland and Labrador and the Northwest Territories following Monday’s pair of losses.

The women’s basketball team returns to the court against Newfoundland and Labrador on Tuesday. The team lost to Ontario in the opening match Monday. The men’s soccer team makes its debut at the Games against the Yukon. Rowing kicks off its competitions with heats and repechage events.
