MONCTON (GNB) – Crossroads for Women, a transition house in Moncton, has received $600,000 from the provincial and federal governments for construction and renovation projects.
The group’s facilities now offer increased capacity for victims of domestic violence in the Moncton region.
“Providing safe options for women and children leaving situations of family violence is very important to our government,” said Finance Minister Cathy Rogers. “This development is a crucial resource for those escaping domestic violence in New Brunswick and is an example of how the federal and provincial governments are working together to improve life for New Brunswickers.”
Rogers spoke on behalf of Families and Children Minister Stephen Horsman.
The funding comes from two federal-provincial cost-sharing agreements, the Social Infrastructure Fund Agreement and the Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement. It is dispersed through the Department of Social Development’s Shelter Enhancement Program, which offers financial assistance to repair and renovate shelters and to acquire or build new shelters and second-stage housing.
“Our government is providing Canadians not only with safe, affordable housing, but is also working hard to strengthen our communities,” said federal Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor. “These new investments are another example of our government’s commitment to ensuring that victims of domestic violence are able to enjoy a safe and stable environment.”
