MONCTON (GNB) – The provincial and federal governments are investing $2.09 million in a new affordable housing complex in the Moncton area.

Along with 15 housing units, the YW Jean E.S. Irving Centre for Women and Children will provide a variety of programs and services.

“The 15-unit housing complex and other important services will help improve the lives of mothers and their children for generations to come,” said Families and Children Minister Stephen Horsman. “Investing in affordable housing is part of your government’s commitment to making New Brunswick the best place in which to live, work and raise a family. I thank all the partners involved in this project. By working together and listening, we are continuing to get things done to improve the lives of all New Brunswickers.”

“Our government is investing in affordable housing here in New Brunswick and across Canada to improve the quality of life for those who need it most,” said Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Ginette Petitpas Taylor. “Thanks to the combined efforts of our partners, we are able to give a helping hand to individuals in need, and, in doing so, we are contributing to the economic and social well-being of the entire community.’’

Petitpas Taylor attended for federal Families, Children and Social Development Minister Jean-Yves Duclos, who is also the minister responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

Funding for the project comes from the federal-provincial Affordable Housing Agreement, through which $78 million will be used to create more affordable housing options in New Brunswick.

The centre is also benefiting from a fundraising campaign called TransitionElle, which collected hundreds of thousands of dollars from private donors.
