SUSSEX (GNB) – Construction is set to begin on an $11.3 million, 30-bed addition to the Kiwanis Nursing Home in Sussex.

Maxim Construction of Saint John has been awarded the tender.

“This new addition will enhance the quality of life for residents, families and staff,” said Public Safety Minister Bruce Northrup who spoke on behalf of Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé. “We are excited to be moving forward with this project. Before long, residents and staff will have a brand new addition to the facility in the community they call home.”

Construction is expected to start in September, 2014 and be completed by the fall of 2016.

“As a government, caring for our seniors is a responsibility we take very seriously,” said Northrup. “I am proud that this new addition to the Kiwanis Nursing Home will make a significant difference in the lives of seniors in the Sussex area.”

The work is part of the provincial government's 2011-2016 Nursing Home Renovation and Replacement Plan under which 354 nursing home beds and 704 specialized care beds are being created.
