SAINT-QUENTIN (GNB) – Construction is underway on three affordable housing units that will assist low-income families and persons with disabilities in Saint-Quentin.

“Investing in affordable housing is fundamental to rebuilding New Brunswick together,” said Restigouche-Lavallée MLA Martine Coulombe. “I am pleased to celebrate this construction project, which shows the provincial government`s commitment to enhancing the quality of life of New Brunswickers and their families, while living within our means.”

Coulombe attended the event for Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé.

“This is an exciting day for the community and I am delighted to be part of it,” said federal Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Minister Bernard Valcourt. “Our government’s investment in Saint-Quentin is helping to provide a safe and affordable place for families and people with disabilities to call home.”

Valcourt spoke on behalf of Candice Bergen, minister of state for Social Development.

The development will receive almost $254,000 in rent supplements from the provincial government. The federal government contributed $120,000. Marc Thibault Construction Enr is developing the overall project of six units.

Funding was made available through the $46.8 million Canada-New Brunswick Agreement for Investment in Affordable Housing 2011-2014.

The units were built to high energy-efficiency standards as per the Provincial Green Building Policy.
