EDMUNDSTON (GNB) – A newly renovated transition house for women who may be victims of family violence, L’Escale MadaVic Inc., officially opened today in Edmundston.

“For women trying to escape a situation of family violence, living with dignity and security means finding a nurturing environment which is free of abuse for themselves and their children,” said Premier David Alward. “For many years, l’Escale MadaVic has been helping individuals begin their journey to a new life that is free of violence.”

“Our government recognizes the urgent need to provide victims of family violence a safe place during crisis situations,” said the federal Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Minister Bernard Valcourt. “By investing in l’Escale Madavic we are also following through on our commitment to offer safe and affordable housing for all Canadians.”

Valcourt spoke on behalf of Candice Bergen, minister of state for Social Development.

“I look forward to the collaboration and contribution from the federal and provincial governments,” said Charlotte Côté, director of Escale MadaVic. “This demonstrates their undeniable support in concrete actions taken to support women in their autonomy and independence.”

The 15-bed transition house received a combined investment of $300,000 from both the federal and provincial governments under the Shelter Enhancement Program. The program offers financial assistance to repair and renovate shelters and to acquire or build new shelters and second-stage housing for women and children who are victims of family violence. The proponent for this transition house is Escale Madavic Inc. The organization purchased and renovated an older building and added five new beds to better serve victims of violence.

“This transition house is an important facility in the Edmundston region,” said Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé. “L’Escale MadaVic will ensure that women and children who find themselves in the most difficult of circumstances and are in need of professional and reassuring support receive proper service close to their home communities.”

Funding for this project was made available through the Canada-New Brunswick Agreement for Investment in Affordable Housing 2011-2014.
