DALHOUSIE (GNB) – Construction is underway on a replacement nursing home in Dalhousie.

Maxim Construction Inc. of Saint John has been awarded the tender to build the structure.

“The new facility will enhance the quality of life for residents, families and staff and we are excited to be moving forward with this project,” said Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé. “Before long, residents and staff will have a brand new, state-of-the-art building in their home community.”

The estimated $22.5 million, 90-bed replacement facility is located at 284 Goderich St. and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2016.

“As a government, caring for our seniors is a responsibility we take seriously,” said Dubé. “I am proud that the replacement of the Dalhousie Nursing Home will make a significant difference for our seniors in this area.”

The existing home still needs to operate until construction of the new facility is complete. Critical water infiltration and building systems issues are being addressed with $2.1 million worth of work. This includes re-grading the exterior, replacing windows, walls, fixtures and pipes, installing backflow prevention, replacing wiring, installing new controls for the heating systems and installing an emergency back-up generator.

The project is part of the provincial government's 2011-2016 Nursing Home Renovation and Replacement Plan, under which 354 nursing home beds and 704 specialized care beds are being created.
