Saint John (GNB) - Twenty-three new affordable housing units for low-income seniors and persons with disabilities were officially opened today at 100 Eugene's Way in Saint John.

"Investing in affordable housing is fundamental to rebuilding New Brunswick together," said MLA for Saint John - Fundy Glen Savoie. "I am pleased to celebrate this project, which shows our government's commitment to enhancing the quality of life of New Brunswickers and their families, while living within our means."

Savoie was speaking on behalf of Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé.

The development is receiving more than $2 million in rent supplements from the provincial government. The federal government is contributing $920,000. The Columbian Charities Council 6595 (2004) Inc. developed the overall project of 46 units.

"We recognize how important it is for seniors to be able to live independently close to their families and friends," said Saint John MP Rodney Weston. "The official opening of Father Eugene O'Leary Seniors Apartment Complex is another example of our Government's commitment toward ensuring that senior citizens and persons with disabilities are able to enjoy a safe and stable environment."

Weston appeared on behalf of Candice Bergen, minister of state (social development).

Funding was made available through the 2011-2014 Investment in Affordable Housing program.

The units were built to high energy-efficiency standards as per the Provincial Green Building Policy.
