MILL COVE (GNB) – Construction is underway on a new nursing home in Mill Cove.

The tender to construct Mill Cove Nursing Home, which will replace the current facility, has been awarded to Castle Rock Construction Services Inc. of Saint John.

“It is exciting to see this project take shape,” said Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé.  “Providing seniors with good quality care and opportunities to continue contributing to the communities they built is a key part of our government's plan to rebuild New Brunswick.”

The construction of the replacement facility, which will have 65 beds, will cost an estimated $18.3 million. This amount is significantly lower than the original project estimate of $22.5 million announced under the 2009 nursing home plan.

Construction began earlier this month with the project to be completed in the summer of 2014.

“Caring for our seniors is a priority and responsibility our government takes seriously,” Dubé said. “The construction of a new nursing home in Mill Cove clearly demonstrates this commitment and underscores our dedication to investing and making improvements in infrastructure and services for seniors.”

The Mill Cove Nursing Home project is part of the provincial government's 2011– 2016 Nursing Home Renovation and Replacement Plan, under which 354 nursing home beds and 704 specialized care beds are being created.
