PERTH-ANDOVER (GNB) – A sod-turning ceremony was held today for the construction of the Victoria Glen Manor in Perth-Andover.

The tender to construct the nursing home, which will replace the current facility, has been awarded to Maxim 2000 Inc. of Saint John.

“I am pleased that this contract has been awarded and that the project is proceeding,” said Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé. “Before long, the residents and staff will have a new, secure facility that will enhance their quality of life in their home community.”

The construction of the replacement facility, which will have 60 beds, will cost an estimated $15.6 million. This amount is significantly lower than the original project estimate of $19.5 million announced under the 2009 nursing home plan.

Construction will begin in August, with the project to be completed in the fall of 2014.

“Caring for our seniors is a responsibility we take very seriously,” Dubé said. “Providing seniors with good quality care and opportunities to continue contributing to the communities they built is a key part of our government's plan to rebuild New Brunswick.”

The Victoria Glen Manor project is part of the provincial government's 2011-2016 Nursing Home Renovation and Replacement Plan, under which 354 nursing home beds and 704 specialized care beds are being created.
