MONCTON (GNB) – Four affordable housing units for non-elderly singles were officially opened today in Moncton.

“Investing in affordable housing is a fundamental part of rebuilding New Brunswick,” said Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé. “This development is a wonderful example of all levels of government, and the entire community, coming together to create good quality, affordable housing that will have a meaningful impact on the lives of the residents.”

The housing development was established by Moncton Community Residences Inc.

The four-unit development at 200 Wesley St. was built at a cost of more than $516,000. More than $320,000 in rent supplements were received from the provincial government, and $160,000 in federal funding was provided to offset construction costs.

“Our government is investing in affordable housing here in Moncton and across Canada to help create jobs and improve the quality of life for those who need it most,” said Riverview-Dieppe-Moncton MP Robert Goguen. "Our government remains focused on four priorities, as outlined by the prime minister, that Canadians care most about: their families, the safety of our streets and communities, their pride in being a citizen of this country, and of course, their personal financial security.”

Goguen participated on behalf of Jason Kenney, minister of employment and social development and minister responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

Funding for the project was made available as a result of a joint investment under the 2009 extension of the Canada-New Brunswick Affordable Housing Initiative.

The unit was built to high energy-efficiency standards and involved consultation with Efficiency NB. Builders of multi-unit residential buildings can receive technical support from Efficiency NB on how to meet energy efficiency targets.
