MONCTON (GNB) – Twenty-eight affordable housing units for seniors were officially opened today at two housing developments in Moncton.

“Our government believes that we have a key role to play in helping people to obtain affordable housing in New Brunswick,” said Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé. “With the support of our partners, we are helping New Brunswickers care for their families by investing in safe and affordable housing.”

“We appreciate all the partners who made these housing units a reality,” she said. “Investing in affordable housing is fundamental to rebuilding New Brunswick together and I am pleased to celebrate these projects, which show our government's commitment to enhancing the quality of life of New Brunswickers and their families while living within our means.”

The first complex is a 28-unit building developed by Danbe Construction Consultants Ltd. at 77 Fleet St. This $2.36 million development received $560,000 in federal stimulus funding to offset construction costs, as well as more than $1 million in rent supplements from the provincial government for 14 units.

The second complex is a 28-unit building developed by Concept PED Holdings Inc. at 89 Fleet St.  This development was also built at a cost of $2.36 million and also received $560,000 in federal stimulus funding to offset construction costs, as well as more than $1 million in rent supplements from the provincial government for 14 units.

“Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, our government is taking concrete action to create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity,” said Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Robert Goguen. “Funding projects like Concept PED Holdings Inc., and Danbe Construction Consultants Ltd., will not only improve the overall housing conditions for seniors, but also helps to stimulate the local economy and create jobs. Our government remains focused on four priorities, as outlined by the prime minister, that Canadians care most about: their families, the safety of our streets and communities, their pride in being a citizen of this country, and of course, their personal financial security.”

Goguen appeared on behalf of Diane Finley, minister of human resources and skills development and minister responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

Funding was made available through Canada's Economic Action Plan. The provincial and federal governments contribute equally to the overall investment of $75 million under the amended Canada-New Brunswick Affordable Housing Program Agreement.

These affordable housing units were built to high energy-efficiency standards and involved consultation with Efficiency NB. Builders of multi-unit residential buildings can receive technical support from Efficiency NB on how to meet energy efficiency targets.
