FREDERICTON (GNB) – Seventy-five affordable housing units for seniors, non-elderly singles and people with disabilities were officially opened today at two housing developments in Fredericton.

“Investing in affordable housing is fundamental to rebuilding New Brunswick together,” said Human Resources Minister Troy Lifford. “I am pleased to celebrate these projects, which show our government's commitment to enhancing the quality of life of New Brunswickers and their families while living within our means.”

Lifford was speaking on behalf of Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé.

Both housing developments were established by Tannery Court Co-operative Ltd.

Brookside Court is a 36-unit development at 287 Brookside Dr. It was built at a cost of more than $4.7 million, and it received $720,000 in federal stimulus funding to offset construction costs, $680,000 through the Affordable Housing Trust and more than $2.7 million in rent supplements from the provincial government for 35 units.

Terrance Court is a 41-unit complex at 8 Terrance St. It was built at a cost of more than $4.4 million, and it received $1.6 million in federal stimulus funding to offset construction costs and more than $3.1 million in rent supplements from the provincial government for 40 units.

“The Government of Canada is proud to contribute $3 million in funding for these projects,” said Fisheries and Oceans Minister Keith Ashfield. “These 75 units will provide quality, affordable housing and benefit the economic and social well-being of the entire community.”

Ashfield appeared on behalf of Diane Finley, minister of human resources and skills development and minister responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

Funding was made available through Canada's Economic Action Plan. The provincial and federal governments contribute equally to the overall investment of $75 million under the amended Canada-New Brunswick Affordable Housing Program Agreement.

These affordable housing units were built to high energy-efficiency standards and involved consultation with Efficiency NB. Builders of multi-unit residential buildings can receive technical support from Efficiency NB on how to meet energy efficiency targets.
