FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following message was issued by Social Development Minister Sue Stultz, who is also minister responsible for seniors, housing and community non-profit organizations, in recognition of Special Care Home Week, Aug. 19 - 25:

Special care homes are a valuable resource in our society and in our long-term care system. With New Brunswick's senior population steadily increasing, these facilities and their staff will continue to play an important role in the support and care of our seniors and adults with disabilities.

Our government is committed to enhancing the quality of life of seniors and is proud to strengthen our partnership with the special care home sector. Over the next five years, 704 specialized care beds for seniors with Alzheimer's disease or dementia will be created across the province. It is important that our seniors are cared for in the right environment and with the right level of services for their needs.

Staff and administrators of special care homes are committed to high standards of care, support and respect for their residents. These facilities are there to help seniors and adults with disabilities lead a good quality lifestyle where they can receive the professional and compassionate care they require.

In New Brunswick, there are more than 400 special care homes caring for 5,600 clients, the majority of whom are seniors. I am inspired by the dedication and commitment shown by staff and administrators of these facilities on a daily basis.

In honour of Special Care Home Week, I encourage all New Brunswickers to show their support for the management and staff of special care homes for the wonderful work they do in our communities for some of our most vulnerable citizens.
