MONCTON (GNB) – Fifty-six new units for low-income seniors and people with disabilities were officially opened today at 257 Robinson St., Moncton.

“Investing in affordable housing is fundamental to rebuilding New Brunswick together,” said Social Development Minister Sue Stultz, who is also minister responsible for seniors, housing and community non-profit organizations. “I am pleased to celebrate this project, which shows our government's commitment to enhancing the quality of life of New Brunswickers and their families, while living within our means.”

The development was established by R.C.L. Developments Ltd. and built at a cost of more than $3.9 million. The project received $1.12 million in federal stimulus funding to offset construction costs and about $2.25 million in rent supplements from the provincial government for 28 units.

“The federal government is providing a hand-up to those who need it most here in Moncton and in all corners of the country,” said Robert Goguen, MP for Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe. “We are pleased that our government's investment of $ 1,120,000 has helped to provide quality, affordable housing and benefit the economic and social well-being of the entire community.”

Goguen attended the opening on behalf of Diane Finley, minister of human resources and skills development and minister responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

Funding was made available through Canada's Economic Action Plan. The provincial and federal governments contribute equally to the overall investment of $75 million under the amended Canada-New Brunswick Affordable Housing Program Agreement.

The project was built to high energy-efficiency standards and involved consultation with Efficiency NB. Builders of multi-unit residential buildings can receive technical support from Efficiency NB on how to meet energy efficiency targets.
