MIRAMICHI (GNB) – The provincial government is investing $1.2 million in a new hospice demonstration client-care model and the construction of a new six-bed hospice in Miramichi.
“Providing palliative care is an important component of our health-care system,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “With this investment, Hospice Miramichi will provide quality care and support to people at the end of their life and their families.”
The new demonstration model integrates the Extra-Mural Program, Hospice Miramichi’s residential hospice, primary care and other community resources.
“This announcement is not only the culmination of a long period of planning, but also the beginning to a new standard for the delivery of hospice/palliative care in Miramichi and in New Brunswick,” said Hospice Miramichi chairman Paul McGraw.
Beginning this fall, this innovative approach will support the needs of palliative care patients and their families through: hospice day programs; outreach programs; access to trained palliative support services for both hospice and Extra-Mural Program patients at home; and a residential facility for end-of-life and palliative respite care services.
An investment of $724,889 over two years will be allocated to a clinical care team, including the hiring of an on-site licensed practical nurse and personal support workers who will be supported by the Extra-Mural Program interdisciplinary team. Funding of $480,000 through the Regional Development Corporation will go toward construction of the hospice facility.
Supporting those in need of palliative care is part of the New Brunswick Family Plan framework. The framework aims to improve the lives of all residents by addressing the factors that have the greatest impact upon health and well-being. It focuses government action in seven priority areas: improving access to primary and acute care; promoting wellness; supporting people with addictions and mental health challenges; fostering healthy aging and support for seniors; advancing women’s equality; reducing poverty; and supporting people with disabilities.
