CAMPBELLTON (GNB) – The provincial government is investing $150,000 in the refurbishment of the Salmon Plaza fountain in downtown Campbellton to commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary.

“We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful province of breathtaking landscapes, where we rejoice in its cultural diversity and welcoming spirit,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Donald Arseneault, who is also the minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “Our investment in this project will enrich Campbellton’s downtown area and serve as a reminder of our nation’s 150th anniversary for years to come.”

Constructed in 1980, the fountain’s centrepiece, Restigouche Sam, is the world's largest stainless steel salmon, measuring 8.5 metres (28 feet) in height.

“We are pleased to have received this funding from Premier Brian Gallant for our Salmon Plaza on Canada's 150th birthday,” said Campbellton Mayor Stephanie Anglehart. “This investment in this key tourist attraction for our city will allow us to continue our tourism strategy in developing Campbellton as the first stop for all visitors coming over the J.C. Van Horne Bridge into New Brunswick.”

Funding is provided under the Program for Municipal Development to Commemorate Canada’s 150th Anniversary. Municipalities with populations of more than 4,000 and less than 25,000 were eligible to apply for funding of up to $150,000 for beautification projects to contribute to a vibrant and attractive downtown and to commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary.
