PETITCODIAC (GNB) – The provincial and federal governments are investing $53,445 towards the Petitcodiac Regional School to upgrade an existing playground.

“The provincial government invests in important community projects such as this playground project at Petitcodiac Regional School to promote active, healthy lifestyles,” said Kent South MLA Benoît Bourque. “We are proud to be a partner in this important recreational community project through the government’s Family and Youth Capital Assistance Program.”

Bourque attended the event for Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Donald Arseneault, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

The upgrades, which involve land preparation and the purchase and installation of new equipment, will include facilities appropriate to older children (9-12 years).

“The federal government knows the importance of working closely with municipalities and communities to support projects that contribute to the quality of life of the families who live there,” said Fundy Royal MP Alaina Lockhart. “That is why I am pleased that we are supporting this project that will allow upgrades to the Petitcodiac Regional School playground and, in turn, create a gathering space for youth and their families.”

Lockhart attended the event for federal Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains, who is also minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

The federal government is investing $18,445 in the project through ACOA’s Community Infrastructure Program and the provincial government is providing $35,000.

“This project came about as a result of the many volunteers who had a vision and worked diligently to make it happen along with the partnership of supporting sponsors,” said Petitcodiac Mayor Gerald Gogan. “It is a valuable recreational asset that will allow our children to benefit from having a safe environment while at the same time promoting the importance of physical activity and play. On behalf of myself and council, I thank those who donated their time and resources to make this playground a reality.”
