BAS-CARAQUET (GNB) – Completion of the New Brunswick Naval Centre has reached another milestone.
“With the federal government’s assurances they will enhance their support, the province will take control of the naval centre, change its governance and leadership as well as invest in the infrastructure necessary for this project to move forward and create jobs,” said Premier Brian Gallant.
It has been confirmed that the federal government will provide a significant portion of the total $25-million cost of three related initiatives: completion of the original project ($10 million); the second phase of the project ($5 million); and replacement and repair of ancillary infrastructure including a travel lift, u-wharf and slip ($10 million).
The provincial government will conclude an improved agreement with Groupe Ocean for the construction and lease of a new floating dry dock before providing financing for its $13-million cost.
As a result of these undertakings, the process to pay suppliers will begin immediately, as long as they have proven valid claims for work completed on the project.
The province is expected to assume ownership of the naval centre in the next several weeks.
