FLORENCEVILLE-BRISTOL (GNB) – The provincial government has begun a multimillion-dollar upgrade of a bridge crossing the St. John River at Florenceville-Bristol.

Phase II of the project will be tendered this summer, with work to continue into 2019.

“Our multi-year economic growth plan is focused on investing in our infrastructure to spur economic growth and job creation,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “This project will ensure the continued service of an important transportation link for industry in western New Brunswick.”

Phase I of the project, which was tendered last year, involves bearing replacement on one of the bridge’s piers and the partial removal of an access ramp. That work continues this year. Phase II consists of replacing two spans of the north approach. Further work to be done over the next three years is in the planning stages.

“The Florenceville Bridge is an important piece of transportation infrastructure for area farmers and industries,” said Environment and Local Government Minister Andrew Harvey. “I am proud to be part of a government that invests in necessary infrastructure to help our traditional industries grow.”

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s $688.2-million capital budget reflects the government’s priority of investing strategically in its buildings, highways and bridges. Strategic investments in infrastructure are a key component of the multi-year New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan, the government’s framework for growing the economy and creating jobs.
