MIRAMICHI (GNB) – The provincial government will award a tender in the weeks ahead for brick and stone repointing at the St. Michael’s Building on the Miramichi campus of the New Brunswick Community College (NBCC). The project is one of several infrastructure improvements planned for the campus; others include a roof replacement, emergency lighting upgrades, and modernizing heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems.

“Your government recognizes the importance of post-secondary education in moving the economy forward,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Donald Arseneault. “These renovations will improve the learning experience for students on the Miramichi campus. We are listening to New Brunswickers and we are getting things done.”

The exterior work at the St. Michael’s Building is expected to be completed over the summer.

“Strategic investments in our building infrastructure not only protect and maintain our assets, they also promote economic growth and job creation,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “I am proud to be part of a government that is investing in our post-secondary institutions.”

The campus offers programs in Applied and Media Arts, Business, Environmental, Health, Social and Protective Services and Trades.

“NBCC makes a significant contribution to the prosperity of our communities, our province and our country,” said Marilyn Luscombe, NBCC president and CEO. “Aging infrastructure is a significant challenge to maintaining that contribution. Investments such as this one will ensure NBCC can continue to provide a quality education for those in Miramichi and all across New Brunswick.”

The provincial government’s 10-year education plans are designed to improve educational outcomes and better prepare students for the future. They set objectives in key priority areas to enhance learning, support educators and bring stability to the education system.

A variety of financial assistance programs are available to students, including Tuition Relief for the Middle Class, the Free Tuition Program, the Timely Completion Benefit, New Brunswick Employment Insurance Connect Program and the New Brunswick Bursary.
