MIRAMICHI (GNB) – The Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour is investing $446,000 through the Youth Employment Fund, One Job Pledge and Workforce Expansion programs to support jobs in the Miramichi region.

“We are getting things done to advance New Brunswickers’ priorities of economic growth, education and health care,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “This funding will allow our province to invest in our workforce, which is important for the economy.”

This funding will provide support for 51 jobs with 36 different employers in the region.

The Youth Employment Fund is a program designed to provide unemployed youth aged 18-29 with an opportunity to develop skills by providing them with a six-month work experience. The employers receive wage subsidies and the participants receive training and experience intended to prepare them for long-term employment, as identified through their employment action plan.

The One Job Pledge program offers eligible employers a one-year wage incentive when they hire recent post-secondary graduates in their field of study.

The Workforce Expansion program builds employer/employee relationships which promote the development of the unemployed by gaining skills intended to ultimately result in long-term, sustainable, full-time employment. Employers receive wage subsidies at a rate and duration that depend on the type of employment that is created and the individual employed.

“Without the passion, insight and assistance from the provincial government, Miramichi's hospitality industry would not have the opportunity to benefit from such wonderful and unique individuals as the two youth we have employed through the Youth Employment Fund,” said Jim Gertridge, general manager of the Rodd Miramichi River hotel. “Both of our employees are hard workers and enjoy interacting with our guests. And even more, our guests appreciate interacting with them.”
