FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government continues to meet with representatives of post-secondary institutions prior to releasing a new tuition assistance program.

“In our recent budget and in the document Moving New Brunswick Forward, we committed to providing financial assistance to those with the greatest financial need to allow them to attend public university, college or other post-secondary training programs,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Francine Landry. “The Education and New Economy Fund contains funding for a new tuition assistance program to fulfil this commitment and make public post-secondary education more accessible.”

In developing the program, Premier Brian Gallant met with student groups and university presidents on Feb. 1-2. Landry has met with them as well. More meetings are planned this week with representatives from both the university and college sectors. In the past, student groups have voiced support for programs which would provide financial assistance to students with the greatest need.

During the announcement, Landry noted that the provincial government would continue to work with universities and colleges to identify their strengths and explore opportunities to make tuition more affordable and funding more sustainable.

“I look forward to continuing discussions with post-secondary institutions and student representatives in the coming days,” said Landry. “We have accomplished a lot together and there is much more to come.”
