FREDERICTON (GNB) – Applications for summer jobs are now available for eligible students under the Student Employment and Experience Development (SEED) program.

“Once again, our government is providing summer employment opportunities for students through the SEED program,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Jody Carr. “Many of the talented leaders and entrepreneurs of today began building their work experience and learning their essential work ethic through this long-standing program.”

The provincially-funded program provides summer jobs to eligible students in provincial government departments and agencies; municipal and First Nations offices; and non-profit organizations. The program provides employers with a supplement equal to the minimum wage rate per hour to help students gain work experience.

In addition, a student entrepreneurship component of the program provides assistance to those wanting to start a summer business. It includes an interest-free loan of up to $3,000. If the loan is repaid on time and all program requirements are met, the student entrepreneur may also qualify for a reimbursement of one-third of the loan.

“The SEED program not only helps organizations gain access to needed resources, it also encourages entrepreneurial spirit and helps us adequately prepare students for labour force needs, which is a chief goal of the Labour Force and Skills Development Strategy 2013-2016 and our plan to rebuild New Brunswick,” said Carr.
 
Carr said the program complements efforts to ensure employment opportunities for recent graduates through the One-Job Pledge.

SEED applications are available at university campuses, community colleges, high schools, regional offices of the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour, human resource services centres and at Service New Brunswick centres.
