FREDERICTON (GNB) – Today is New Brunswick College of Craft and Design Day, marking the start of a year-long celebration of its Diamond Jubilee.

"For 75 years, the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design has built a strong foundation, which is why it has become a national leader in artistic and creative excellence," said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Jody Carr. "Our New Brunswick College of Craft and Design students never fail to highlight the incredible artistic talent that we have in New Brunswick.”

The history of the college dates to 1938 when the provincial government established an outreach training program in hand-weaving. The goal was to give persons employed seasonally in fishing, farming and forestry the means to earn extra income. This endeavour would later evolve into the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design.

"Our government is proud of the talented students at the college who are graduating with the necessary skills for success in their respective industries, which is a contributing factor in helping to rebuild New Brunswick," said Carr. "We are equally proud of the college and instructors who show their commitment to the arts through their teaching excellence during the past 75 years. A solid educational foundation is key, which is why our government has outlined it as a priority in the Labour Force and Skills Development Strategy 2013-2016."

Today, the college has seats for 282 full-time students. It also offers instruction to part-time students and continuing educational learners in 11 program areas.

The college features a studio-based education with an entrepreneurship focus, recognized with a bachelor of applied arts offered in partnership with the University of New Brunswick; a certificate in foundation visual arts; a certificate in graduate studies; and diplomas in jewelry/ metal arts, fibre arts, aboriginal visual arts, graphic design, fashion design, fine craft, integrated media, photography and textiles.

Located in downtown Fredericton, the college is the only one in Canada focused solely on fine craft and design.
