FREDERICTON (GNB) – More than $6,500 worth of books has been donated by the Literacy Coalition of New Brunswick to the New Brunswick Public Library Service. The donation was made possible through the New Brunswick Public Libraries Foundation.

"New Brunswick's Public Library Service is strengthened through our partnership with the libraries foundation and the various organizations such as the Literacy Coalition of New Brunswick, which help augment our services and collections," said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Danny Soucy. "Partnerships such as this one help us support literacy and an enhanced quality of life for New Brunswickers through our public library service."

The donation includes 194 copies of three hardcover books: Toy Story: The Art and Making of the Animated Film by John Lasseter and Steve Daly; The Art of Disney's A Christmas Carol by Diana Landon; and We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball by Kadir Nelson, all of which feature outstanding illustrations.

The donation was inspired by a similar gift made by the New Brunswick Maple Syrup Association this past November.

"We heard that the New Brunswick Maple Syrup Association had donated copies of a children's book about maple syrup to the libraries foundation and saw that type of partnership as the ideal way for us to connect New Brunswickers with these wonderful books," said Natasha Bozek, executive director of the literacy coalition. "Public libraries play a vital role in supporting literacy in New Brunswick communities."

The donated books have been distributed throughout the province's libraries and bookmobiles and are now available to borrow free of charge to all New Brunswickers.

"The New Brunswick Public Library Service provides a well-established infrastructure, including 63 public libraries and three bookmobiles," said Brian Hudson, chair of the libraries foundation.  "A partnership with our foundation enables organizations to use this infrastructure effectively to make their materials available free of charge to New Brunswickers and to enable us to support library collections."
