EDMUNDSTON (GNB) – As the 2014 World Acadian Congress approaches, Premier David Alward is inviting New Brunswickers to plan a vacation in northwestern New Brunswick.

The fifth congress is set to kick off in 50 days, and the festivities will take place in northwestern New Brunswick, northern Maine, and the Témiscouata region of Quebec from August 8 to 24.

"This is an ideal opportunity for New Brunswickers and tourists to discover all the riches offered by l'Acadie des terres et forêts (the land and forests of Acadie) and to take advantage of this major event for planning their summer vacations," Alward said.

This year, the congress is offering programming with something for everyone, from cultural, educational, and sporting events to formal ceremonies, mega parties, conferences, genealogy sessions, and over a hundred family reunions.

"New Brunswick is proud to be one of the hosts of this great gathering through which bonds between cultures and different regions can be forged and strengthened in an atmosphere of celebration and solidarity," Alward said. "I urge all New Brunswickers to join us in August and take part in the celebrations."

The previous congress, held on the Acadian Peninsula in 2009, generated an estimated $22 million in economic spinoffs.

“The 2014 World Acadian Congress will benefit all of New Brunswick, because it will contribute significantly to economic growth in the northwestern part of the province and will stimulate the tourist industry by welcoming thousands of francophone and anglophone visitors," Alward said.
