MONTREUX, Switzerland (CNB) – The provincial government achieved its objectives at the XIIIth Francophonie summit in Montreux, Switzerland, with an official statement by the summit reaffirming the importance of youth and technology in la Francophonie. The province also had a strong presence throughout the summit.

"We can be proud of the role we played throughout the summit not only during the official deliberations, but with our efforts to promote New Brunswick and our Acadian community," said Premier David Alward.

La Francophonie recognized the importance of developing strategies for youth and for information technology, two areas of expertise for New Brunswick.

"Members of la Francophonie can share resources and expertise in education, information technology and science," said Alward in his official address to the summit participants.

The demonstration of a digital classroom by New Brunswick students has generated interest among visitors to the Village of la Francophonie. The New Brunswick kiosk, located at the heart of the Village of la Francophonie, was visited by thousands throughout the summit.

"The powerful performances of New Brunswick artists at the village and our meetings with the Swiss media, businesses and representatives, gave our province unparalleled visibility," said Economic Development Minister Paul Robichaud, who is also deputy premier and minister responsible for la Francophonie. "Our meetings with the business sector have opened up promising prospects for our province."

The delegation of New Brunswick artists made an impact in the communities of Montreux and Geneva. They also participated in radio shows and media interviews.

Alward and Robichaud thanked members of the delegation for having contributed to increased awareness of New Brunswick and the Acadian community. The delegation members included the musical band La Virée, singers Monique Poirier, Nathalie Renault, Isabelle Pelletier as well as Les Échassiers, comedian Monique LeBlanc and historian Maurice Basque.
