FREDERICTON (GNB) – Applications for the 2016 Low-Income Seniors' Benefit are now available.

“We are proud to provide this benefit to vulnerable seniors who often need help with heating bills, household expenses or other essentials,” said Finance Minister Roger Melanson. “Many seniors rely on this support from year to year to supplement their income and help make ends meet following the long winter months in New Brunswick.”

The $400 low-income seniors’ benefit provided assistance for 40,621 seniors in 2015, totalling more than $16.2 million in payments.

To be eligible for the benefit, a person must have been a resident of New Brunswick on Dec. 31, 2015, and have received one of the following federal benefits under the Old Age Security Act:

  • Guaranteed Income Supplement (65 years or older);
  • Allowance for Survivor Program (between 60 and 64 years old); or
  • Allowance Program (between 60 and 64 years old).

“The benefit helps to alleviate poverty and improve quality of life for seniors,” said Social Development Minister Cathy Rogers. “All eligible low-income seniors are encouraged to take advantage of this benefit that was created to enhance their financial security.”
