FREDERICTON (CNB) - New Brunswickers are being reminded to apply for the Tuition Rebate Program as they complete their tax returns for 2009. Finance Minister Greg Byrne issued the reminder today. Forms for the rebate are available at Service New Brunswick offices.

"This program has been widely acclaimed, and we are certainly very proud to have been able to double the amount of assistance that this program delivers to graduating students," said Byrne. "This assistance is given during a period of time in the lives of graduates when it's needed most - when they are entering the labour force, and in many cases, beginning their careers."

Eligible applicants may receive up to $20,000 in rebate over 20 years. The maximum annual rebate was doubled to $4,000 in the 2009-10 budget.

Those eligible for the rebate are students who have graduated from an eligible post-secondary institution from anywhere in the world; paid tuition on or after Jan. 1, 2005; are residents of New Brunswick; file a New Brunswick personal income tax return; and have New Brunswick income tax payable.

"The main goal of this program is to ensure that as many graduates as possible stay right here at home to work and raise a family, as well as for people from other jurisdictions to make New Brunswick their new home," said Byrne. "We are very proud of the many different investments that we have made in post-secondary education and those hard-working graduates who will help shape the future of our province."
