FREDERICTON (GNB) – Preliminary numbers show that hunters have harvested 3,728 moose during the 2015 season, about 45 more than in 2014, which represents an increase of one per cent.

Last year, 3,683 moose were harvested.

Natural Resources Minister Denis Landry said there continues to be great interest in the hunt.

“I congratulate all the successful hunters,” said Landry. “This year more than 63,000 New Brunswickers applied for a licence. As always, our staff will evaluate the numbers and the data collected from the registration stations. We have already started preparing for the 2016 season.”

Department biologists say the estimated moose population remains strong at about 32,000 adult animals.

Below is a list of the preliminary numbers by region:

  • Region 1 (northeast): 952 moose (down by 12 moose, a decrease of one per cent);
  • Region 2 (central and southeast): 727 moose (down by 19 moose, a decrease of three per cent);
  • Region 3 (south): 646 moose (down by 114 moose, a decrease of 15 per cent); and
  • Region 4 (northwest): 1,403 moose (up by 189 moose, an increase of 16 per cent).
