FREDERICTON (GNB) – With moose hunting season starting Sept. 23, hunters are reminded that officers from the Department of Natural Resources and from policing agencies will be patrolling forests to address the ongoing issue of individuals hunting from stands built into trucks.

Under the Fish and Wildlife Act it is illegal for hunters to carry a loaded firearm in or on a vehicle. It is also illegal to discharge a firearm from a vehicle.

Under the Motor Vehicle Act, the elevated stands built into the back of trucks are unsafe due to height restrictions and seat belt issues.

Over the years, conservation officers have approached hunters driving with these structures attached to their trucks only to find the people trying to unload their firearms before the officers could arrive. This action causes great danger to those in the cab of the truck as well as to the approaching officers.

Hunters are urged to be diligent and to promote safety at all times.
