FREDERICTON (GNB) – The results of the 2014 moose licence draw are now available.
There were 66,626 applications for the 4,612 licences available for New Brunswick residents.
The 2014 moose hunting season has been increased by two days and is scheduled to run from Sept. 23-27. The change came through an amendment to the Fish and Wildlife Act.
"I am very happy to announce that the government has decided, after consulting with the population and stakeholders, to lengthen the season from three to five days since moose hunting is a very popular recreational activity for which demand has greatly exceeded supply in the province in recent years," said Natural Resources Minister Paul Robichaud. "The department kept sustainability in mind when making this decision, which is why the moose license quota for the 2014 season will be held at 2013 numbers. However, the longer season will give residents more opportunities to hunt."
Those who entered the draw can find out if they were successful by calling 1-800-459-3729 or by checking online at the Department of Natural Resources website.
Whether calling or checking online, residents should have their valid Medicare card ready as they will be asked to enter their number.
Letters will be sent to all successful applicants. To purchase their moose licence, hunters must bring their valid Medicare card to a Service New Brunswick centre on or after Aug. 18.
This year's draw used a pool system introduced three years ago. It improved the odds in the moose draw for hunters who have not had their names drawn for more than 10 years. In 2014, pool 4 came into effect for applicants who have been unsuccessful for at least 20 years. Applicants in this pool had a 70.41 per cent success rate.
