FREDERICTON (GNB) – Amendments to the Fish and Wildlife Act designed to facilitate the implementation of a web-based licensing system were introduced today in the legislative assembly.

Natural Resources Minister Paul Robichaud said the planned e-licensing system would allow hunters, anglers and trappers to obtain licences online at any time. Licences would also continue to be available through participating private vendors and at Service New Brunswick centres.

“The Department of Natural Resources issues about 150,000 hunting, angling and trapping licences each year,” said Robichaud. “The government is modernizing how they are obtained. The e-licensing system will make licences instantly available to New Brunswickers whenever they need one.”

The proposed amendments include a new client registration process to apply for or acquire hunting, trapping or angling licences. Clients will be assigned a unique client identification number, which they will use to log in to the system, and a card containing their name and identification number.

The e-licensing system is being developed jointly by the Department of Natural Resources and Service New Brunswick. The first release of the system, which will involve the client registration system and angling licences, is scheduled for early 2015. Hunting and trapping licences are scheduled to be available by fall 2015.

In the meantime, participating Service New Brunswick Centres and private vendors will continue to sell most hunting, angling and trapping licences using the existing paper system. Some specialty licences and permits are available at Natural Resources offices.
