FREDERICTON (CNB) – Promoting investment in the province's mineral and petroleum sectors will be the focus at the annual Exploration, Mining and Petroleum New Brunswick conference Nov. 6-8 at the Delta Fredericton Hotel in Fredericton.

"Our government supports the responsible development of the mineral and petroleum sectors,'' said Natural Resources Minister Bruce Northrup. "These industries have been, and can continue to be, key contributors to job creation and economic growth in our province.''

The value of mineral production in New Brunswick reached $1.15 billion in 2010, with the mineral sector directly employing 3,400 people.

The province has about 30 producing gas wells and 16 producing oil wells. There is strong interest by companies conducting oil and gas exploration.

The conference is hosted by the Department of Natural Resources together with the New Brunswick Branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum; and the New Brunswick Prospectors and Developers Association.

About 350 delegates from across Canada are registered for the event including representatives from the mineral industry, the oil and gas sector, First Nations, universities, and the three levels of government.

The conference is a forum for the presentation of research, and the review of mineral and petroleum exploration and mining projects carried out in New Brunswick in 2010 and 2011. Northrup will address delegates at the opening session on Monday, Nov. 7, while Premier David Alward will speak at the closing banquet on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

The conference will include industry presentations, displays and exhibits and provides an opportunity for companies offering goods and services to the mining and petroleum sectors to display their products and take advantage of networking opportunities.

More information is available online.

Members of the media wishing to attend the closing banquet must register in advance by contacting Anne Bull, communications, Department of Natural Resources, 506-453-2614, [email protected] by no later than noon on Friday, Nov. 4.
