FREDERICTON (CNB) – A recent increase in fires on forest lands has resulted in the closure of the province to category 1 fires, such as campfires and the burning of small amounts of brush and debris.

The closure does not affect category 1 fires in approved campgrounds and approved fire pits.

The Department of Natural Resources reminds the public to be vigilant in having spark arresters on equipment and vehicles such as chain saws, motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles because exhaust systems can easily ignite vegetation. Driving and parking in designated areas and avoiding work in dry brush and grassy areas will reduce the likelihood of fires.

For additional information, call the 24-hour toll-free burning permit information line at 1-866-458-8080 or visit the department website.
