SAINT JOHN (GNB) – The federal, provincial and municipal governments today announced funding totalling more than $4.4 million for seven new infrastructure projects in Saint John.

“Infrastructure investments for community spaces, roads and essential services like clean drinking water and reliable wastewater services contribute to economic growth, a clean environment and stronger communities,” said Saint John Harbour MLA Ed Doherty. “Your government is getting things done in areas that are a priority for New Brunswickers. These investments will have a lasting positive impact on the quality of life of all residents.”

Two projects are funded through the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund and involve the construction of storm sewers, renewal of watermains and sanitary sewers as well as necessary related road work.

The other five projects are funded through the Small Communities Fund. They include upgrades to a water and wastewater infrastructure monitoring system, road repair, improvements to the heating and cooling system and new energy efficient windows at the Carleton Community Centre, renewal of watermains and sanitary sewers and the construction of storm sewers.

“By investing in public infrastructure, the Government of Canada is creating good, well-paying middle-class jobs and supporting economic growth,” said Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long. “I am pleased to see these seven infrastructure projects in Saint John move forward. Projects like these will help ensure the long-term health and prosperity of New Brunswick residents for generations to come.”

The provincial government is contributing more than $1.3 million and the federal government more than $1.6 million to these projects while the City of Saint John will provide the balance of the funding.

The Clean Water and Wastewater Fund is designed to improve the safety and quality of water while supporting a clean economy. The Small Communities Fund supports projects of national, regional and local significance that contribute to economic growth, a clean environment and stronger communities.
