SHIPPAGAN (GNB) - The Environmental Trust Fund (ETF) will invest about $350,000 in eight projects in the northeast region of New Brunswick in 2015-16.

“The provincial government is committed to protecting and preserving our province’s natural environment,” said Shippagan-Lamèque-Miscou MLA Wilfred Roussel. “The government is pleased to support these grassroots environmental projects in partnership with local communities.”

Roussel attended the announcement for Environment and Local Government Minister Brian Kenny.

The following projects will receive funding in the northeast region:

  • La coalition pour viabilité de l’environnement de Shippagan, Lamèque-Miscou will continue with its plan and programs to enhance water quality in the area, ($30,000).
  • Les pros de l’environnement at École la Rivère in Pokemouche will establish a community garden to provide fresh produce to the school and community, ($10,000).
  • Institut de recherche sur les zones côtières inc. will carry out two projects. The organization will work with communities in the Acadian Peninsula on climate change adaptation, ($90,000). It will also assess the benefits and costs of options for climate change in five Acadian municipalities, ($75,000).
  • The Village of Le Goulet will work on restoring local sand dunes through natural measures, ($49,000).
  • The Town of Lamèque will continue with its efforts in algae cleanup along the shoreline at Rue du Rivage, ($56,100).
  • Le Comité de Gestion Environnementale de la Rivière Pokemouche Inc. will carry out two projects. The group will work to improve water quality and the natural habitat of Cowan’s Creek and Pollard Brook in the Pokemouche River watershed, ($30,000); and it will seek to educate local students about the importance of good water quality, ($10,000).

A total of 232 projects valued at $6.2 million have been approved for funding in New Brunswick under the ETF. In addition, another $1.8 million has been set aside

to support other projects that will benefit the environment in the coming year.     

The fund provides assistance to community groups, organizations, municipalities and institutions for projects that produce tangible, measurable benefits to the environment.
