FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following message was issued today by Environment and Local Government Minister Brian Kenny in recognition of Earth Day:

New Brunswick is proud to join the international community in celebrating the 45th annual Earth Day. More than one billion people in 192 countries will participate in related activities making it the largest environmental event in the world.

This year special attention is being paid to the theme of cleaning our commute and promoting greener ways of getting around, including:

  • walking;
  • cycling;
  • rollerblading;
  • public transportation;
  • choosing fuel efficient vehicles;
  • carpooling;
  • telecommuting; and
  • reducing the number of trips by planning errands.

Choosing greener commute options can make a big difference in the fight against climate change. Our government is committed to protecting the environment and addressing climate change while sustaining economic growth and creating jobs. We will work with New Brunswickers to enhance our plan to address climate change and will also collaborate with our counterparts across the country to help determine best practices going forward.

I encourage everyone to consider ways they can clean their commute and to participate in the various Earth Day activities that are happening throughout the province.

We can celebrate Earth Day every day of the year by adopting greener habits that help to protect and promote our air, land and water resources for current and future generations.
