FREDERICTON (GNB) – Owners of ice-fishing shelters are encouraged to monitor weather and remove their structures from provincial waterways before they become an environmental hazard.

“Ice fishing is an excellent way to enjoy our province’s waterways during the winter,” said Environment and Local Government Minister Brian Kenny. “Along with this enjoyment also comes the responsibility of ensuring that our recreational activities do not harm our environment.”

Waste and debris resulting from either poor site management or failure to remove shelters before spring break-up pose a risk to provincial waterways.

The department encourages all New Brunswickers to be responsible stewards of the environment, and to report any infraction of environmental regulations.
