FREDERICTON (GNB) – New Brunswickers who wish to serve on the Assessment and Planning Appeal Board may now apply.

“Our government wants to encourage New Brunswickers to get involved in decision-making that affects them directly,” said Environment and Local Government Minister Brian Kenny. “All candidates that meet the criteria will be considered. We encourage women to apply because we believe that in order to help make our government smarter and our economy stronger, we need to ensure that the voices of women are heard on policy-making bodies, including the appointment of more women to provincial agencies, boards and commissions.”

The board is an independent body that provides New Brunswickers with a process for appealing decisions made in relation to property tax assessments, land-use planning, and municipal heritage preservation.

The Department of Environment and Local Government is looking for members and alternates.

Members are needed for:

  • Region 1 – Moncton;
  • Region 2 – Richibucto;
  • Region 7 – Hampton; and
  • Region 10 – Edmundston.

Alternate members are needed for:

  • Region 1 – Moncton;
  • Region 2 – Richibucto;
  • Region 3 – Bathurst;
  • Region 5 – Campbellton; and
  • Region 10 – Edmundston.

Strong consideration will be given to individuals who can demonstrate the following:

  • Board members must reside in the region to which they are appointed.
  • Board members must not be employed within the provincial civil service.
  • Appeal hearings are conducted on weekdays during business hours; board members must be able to attend hearings at these times.
  • The chair may, if he or she considers it necessary, designate a member to sit on a panel hearing an appeal in another region. In this instance, travel to another region would be necessary.
  • The ability to hear appeals in both official languages would be considered an asset.

The selection of successful candidates will be based on merit, with special efforts to promote diversity and inclusion of New Brunswick's two official linguistic communities, as well as women, First Nations, persons with disabilities, visible minority groups, and all regions of the province.
