ATHOLVILLE (GNB) – The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will soon issue a tender for the sale of the old chairlift from Sugarloaf Provincial Park.
“Your government values transparency and openness, which is why we dispose of assets like the chairlift through a public tender process,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “The sale of the old chairlift from the park allows us to create more revenue to fund the needs of the province.”
The chairlift no longer meets the requirements of the park, though it could be used at a different location with a beginner level capacity.
In May 2018, the provincial government announced a new chairlift at the park in order to increase the capacity for alpine skiing and mountain biking.
The new chairlift will be a fixed-grip quad with a loading conveyor. It will have an uphill capacity of 2,000 people per hour and a family of four will be able to ride the chair together. Mountain bikers, who previously had to ride the chair alone with their bikes, will now be able to share the ride with other bikers.
