HAUT-MADAWASKA (GNB) – The provincial government will invest about $5.5 million in paving and chipseal projects in parts of northwestern New Brunswick this year, as part of its 2018-19 capital budget.
“Your government knows how important safe and reliable roads are to a strong and reliable New Brunswick economy,” said Economic Development Minister Francine Landry. “This will create jobs, stimulate the economy and help continue the efficient flow of goods and services.”
Landry was speaking on behalf of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser.
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will pave a 2.4-kilometre section of Route 161 from the Route 120 area to the former village limit of Clair, and a 4.8-kilometre section of Route 215 from the former village limit of Saint-François de Madawaska to Beaulieu Road.
The department will also chipseal and reseal sections of Deuxième Sault Road, Levasseur Road, Rang 2 Road and Montagne des Neiges Road.
Under the Municipal Designated Highway Program, the department will fund the paving of a one-kilometre section of Route 120 in the T. Nadeau Road area towards the Quebec Border in Lac Baker and will fund two culvert replacements in Sainte-Anne-de-Madawaska on Martin Road. The department will fund the construction of a storm sewer on Davis Road in the Village of Rivière-Verte.
The program allows municipalities to apply for funding assistance for capital upgrade projects. Funding for the program has more than doubled since the 2014-15 fiscal year, increasing to $25 million in 2015. It has remained at that level as part of a government commitment to sustain funding for municipalities.
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s $688.2 million capital budget reflects the government’s priority of investing strategically in its buildings, highways and bridges. Strategic investments in infrastructure are a key component of the multi-year New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan, the province’s framework for growing the economy and creating jobs.
